Power Outage Preparedness

Power outages can occur at any time in Hawaii due to strong winds, hurricanes, floods, heavy rain, and electrical issues. Power outages can last anywhere from less than an hour to multiple days. Loss of power often affects many regularly-used electronics, including lighting, Wi-Fi, computers, and the network. Longer power outages may affect the cold storage of food in residences. Stay vigilant and be prepared for a power outage.

Preparation

Going multiple-days without power is not common, but it is possible and has happened due to the remote location of Laie. It's best to be prepared in case this happens.

It is helpful to have these items on hand in the event of a power outage:

  1. Non-perishable food and snacks (ideally food that does not need heating)
  2. Water
  3. Charged power bank(s)
  4. Battery-powered radio
  5. Flashlights with extra batteries

During a Power Outage

University Operations

If power outages occur during regular work or class hours, students and employees should refer to BYUH Alerts or myBYUH for more immediate information and instructions. Employees should follow their supervisor's guidance, and students should follow the direction of their professors.

Backup power is available to maintain food service operations and storage. The Banyan Dining Hall will continue to serve patrons through power outages, though longer term power-outages may require adjustments to hours and menu availability.

Indoor Safety

  1. Do not use matches or other flames inside any building. Gas lines might be damaged, and flames could ignite a fire or explosion.
  2. Do not use gas heaters or generators indoors. This will produce life-threatening carbon monoxide poisoning.
  3. Unplug all appliances to avoid a power surge when the power returns.
  4. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep food cold. Open them as little as possible.
  5. If you are trapped in an elevator, do not panic. Use the call button in the elevator to alert others that you are trapped and activate the emergency call system. If you can, call Campus Security at (808) 675-3503.
  6. For long-term power outages, water may not be available in residences and restrooms. Most of the sewage in Laie is electrically pumped. Refrain from using toilets unless necessary.

Outdoor Safety

  1. Be aware that traffic lights may not be functioning, and roads will be congested.
  2. Stay away from power lines.

Request Help

Important: DO NOT attempt to fix any electrical issues in your building/residence.

If power outages are due to electrical issues within campus buildings, students and employees should create an FM work order or contact Campus Security at (808) 675-3503.

After a Power Outage

Power restoration is often when injuries and local damage occur.

  1. Safely plug appliances back in.
  2. Check food for signs of spoiling.
  3. Continue to follow BYUH Alerts or myBYUH for information on campus operations and safety.
  4. Report lingering issues to Campus Security at (808) 675-3503.
