Bomb Threat Preparedness
A bomb threat is any threat—real or implied—to detonate an explosive or combustible device. While many bomb threats do not result in an actual device being found, all threats must be taken seriously and reported immediately.
Bomb threats may be communicated in several ways, including phone calls, emails, written notes, or suspicious packages or bags.
Preparation
Although bomb threats are rare, preparing ahead of time can help reduce confusion and panic during an incident.
- Sign up for BYUH Alerts to receive official emergency notifications.
- Be familiar with evacuation routes and exits in buildings you regularly use.
- Trust your instincts—if something seems suspicious, report it.
- Know how to contact emergency services and campus security.

If You Receive a Bomb Threat
If you receive a bomb threat by phone, email, message, or other means:
- Stay calm.
- Do not attempt to investigate or verify the threat yourself.
- Do not share the threat with others.
- Call 911 immediately, then notify Campus Security.
- Follow all instructions provided by law enforcement and campus officials.
If the threat is written or electronic, preserve the message and provide it to authorities.
If You See a Suspicious Object
If you notice an unattended or suspicious item (such as a bag or package):
- Do not touch, move, or open it.
- Move away from the area.
- Call 911 immediately, then notify Campus Security.
- Warn others nearby as you leave, if safe to do so.
During a Bomb Threat
If an evacuation is ordered during a Bomb Threat:
- Leave the area immediately and calmly.
- Take only essential personal items if instructed.
- Follow posted evacuation routes and directions from authorities.
- Move to the designated evacuation area.
- Do not re-enter the building until officials declare it safe.
After the Incident
Once the situation has been resolved:
- Continue to follow official instructions from BYUH and law enforcement.
- Be aware that emotional reactions such as stress or anxiety are normal.
- Reach out to campus support services if you need assistance.
- Avoid sharing rumors or unverified information.
Information for Parents and Families
In the event of a bomb threat, families should rely on official BYUH communications and alerts for accurate information. Please avoid coming to campus unless directed, as this may interfere with emergency operations.
